As your Representative-
I defended the taxpayer by opposing increasing the size of government.
I defended Colorado families, by opposing tax and fee increases that have been levied on citizens and families that are already struggling.
I have been defending small businesses. I opposed increasing the financial burden on those that create jobs in our community.
I have supported legislation that would make Colorado a more attractive place to outside companies to bring new high paying jobs.
I have been supporting the responsible development of our traditional resources, while at the same time supporting the advancement of renewable and alternative energy in a fiscally responsible way.
I have supported legislation to prioritize government spending and make the state government more transparent and accountable to the taxpayers.
As the Chair of House Finance Committee, I manage all of the Committee meetings and hearings. On this committee I will typically evaluate legislative proposals that will have a fiscal impact on the state. Some issues that could come before this committee include state spending, tax code, changes to income tax forms, and business incentive programs.
On the Judiciary Committee, I will hear the proposals and testimonies from individuals who support or oppose legislation dealing with judicial matters in Colorado. The members of the Judiciary Committee and I will consider matters concerning courts and judges, civil liberties, Colorado's constitution, revision of the Colorado Revised Statutes, the correctional system and prison facilities, juvenile justice, and homeland security. The committee also has legislative oversight responsibility for the Department of Corrections, the Department of Law, the Department of Public Safety, the Judicial Department, and the Governor's Office of Homeland Security.
As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I will consider matters concerning the review of pending legislation that has been determined to have a fiscal impact. The committee generally reviews legislation that has been referred to it after an initial review and approval by the first committee of reference.
The Issues
Jobs and the Economy
For me, it is clear which issues are before us: jobs and growing the economy. There is a need to promote legislation that will help build our economy to make Colorado a better place to live, work, and raise a family. I have been and will continue to pursue an aggressive legislative agenda that will help strengthen our economy. Making our state an attractive place to do business benefits us all, so please be assured that I will continue to fight for policies that will ensure a business climate that brings in high paying jobs to secure a thriving economy.
Education
Another important piece of our infrastructure is education. In pushing hard to stimulate our economy, I am very aware of the need to promote policies that will create a education system that helps equip our children to succeed in whatever sector of our society they choose to engage. Thriving businesses are key to filling the state coffers that fund our children's education. This flow of revenue can only be secured when our citizens are able to perform in the business sphere without being weighed down by irresponsible tax measures. When businesses grow our education system gets the funding it needs.
Energy and the Environment
Environmental responsibility is extremely important, particularly in our beautiful state. I firmly support making the many innovative forms of renewable energy a part of our overall energy portfolio that will help drastically reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy. However, these efforts should be made in a fiscally responsible way. Unnecessarily burdening our energy sector with mandates is irresponsible and counter productive. Moving forward with renewable energy technology and implementation in a way that is conducive to our infrastructure will benefit our energy sector as well as our business climate.
